What Makes Pure Beeswax Candles Different?
Pure Beeswax Is a Different Kind of Candle Wax

Pure beeswax candles behave differently than many mass-market candles because the material itself is naturally different. Beeswax is dense, lightly aromatic, and develops unique characteristics that are often absent in paraffin-heavy or heavily fragranced candles.
Many people first notice the difference through longer burn times, subtle honey aroma, or the natural white “bloom” that can appear on pure beeswax over time. These are normal characteristics of authentic beeswax and part of what makes handmade beeswax candles feel distinct from lower-cost blended alternatives.
At LOONMOON, our candles are made with pure beeswax and cotton wicks, without added dyes or paraffin. Small surface variations, natural bloom, and slight colour differences are all part of working with a natural material rather than heavily processed wax blends.
Not All Beeswax Candles Are the Same
Beeswax candles can vary significantly depending on purity, formulation, and how the candles are made. Some products marketed as “beeswax candles” may contain blends of paraffin, soy, fragrance oils, dyes, or smaller amounts of beeswax mixed into lower-cost waxes. We typically say it is 'cut with other blends'.... Sometimes it is for legitimate reasons, but if they say it is PURE beeswax then that is misleading.
This is one reason burn performance, aroma, appearance, and overall feel can differ so much between candles that are all labeled as beeswax.
Pure beeswax is naturally dense and typically burns differently than many blended waxes. Handmade beeswax candles also tend to show more natural variation, including subtle colour differences, surface texture changes, and the white matte coating often called “wax bloom.”
At LOONMOON, we prefer to leave those natural characteristics visible rather than heavily processing or masking them. To us, those details are part of what makes pure beeswax feel authentic.
Why Pure Beeswax Develops White Bloom
Pure beeswax can naturally develop a soft white coating over time, often called wax bloom. This is not damage, mold, or poor storage. It is a normal surface change that can happen with pure beeswax.
Bloom is one of the visual signs that a candle is made with real beeswax rather than a heavily processed or dyed wax blend. Some people enjoy the soft matte look, while others gently buff the candle with a clean cloth to bring back more shine.
For us, wax bloom is part of the charm of pure beeswax. It gives each candle a slightly rustic, natural appearance and reminds you that beeswax is a real material, not a synthetic-looking imitation.
Why Beeswax Candles Often Burn Longer
Pure beeswax is naturally dense, which can contribute to slower burn characteristics compared to many lower-density waxes. Burn time can still vary depending on wick size, candle shape, airflow, and how the candle is used, but beeswax is often appreciated for its steady and long-lasting burn.
Our own burn testing has shown strong performance across different candle styles. For example, our hand-poured beeswax votives reached over 11 hours during uninterrupted testing, while our tealights and tapers are also designed for long, steady burns.
Because beeswax is a natural material, slight differences between batches are normal. Handmade candles may show small variations in colour, surface texture, and burn behaviour that reflect the nature of real beeswax rather than heavily standardized industrial wax blends.
The Natural Aroma of Beeswax
Pure beeswax candles often carry a light natural aroma that is very different from heavily fragranced candles. Many people notice subtle notes that resemble warm honey, beeswax, or natural sweetness, especially when the candles are first opened or burning nearby.
Because our candles are made without added fragrances or dyes, the scent remains soft and natural rather than overpowering. Some batches of beeswax may smell slightly different from others depending on the flowers and nectar sources involved in the original honey production.
That natural variation is part of what many people enjoy about authentic beeswax candles.
Handmade Variation Is Normal
Handmade beeswax candles are not meant to look perfectly identical. Small surface marks, slight colour differences, tiny air pockets, or natural texture changes can all occur when working with pure beeswax.
Unlike heavily processed industrial candles, natural beeswax responds to temperature, storage conditions, and the characteristics of each wax batch. These small variations are part of what makes handmade candles feel more connected to the material itself.
At LOONMOON, we prefer to preserve those natural characteristics rather than heavily refining or masking them.
